GHOST IN THE SHELL REALIZE PROJECT at Shibuya

It’s been a long time since I’ve been to Shibuya.

Yeah, it might not be the most appropriate place for our nerdy Machi. I mean, this is Hikarie, a really, really super high class new building that was just finished in 2012.

Shibuya Hikarie

“Shibuya Hikarie” is located in the Shibuya Station east exit that is Japan eminent terminal where railroad 8 line runs in in high-rise compound facility 34 stories above the ground and 4 stories underground.

There are many great stores and restaurants! Makes me kind of nervous!

What is Machi coming to do today?

Today is an unusually academic event.
It’s a research introduction and exhibition of productions from various fields that aim to recreate the world of Ghost in the Shell.
There are also symposiums featuring animation series production teams and university professors.

This is a new kind of plan, isn’t it? Let’s go!

It’s not only for university research, there are booths from all sorts of organizations.

There are a lot of really interesting exhibitions, like attempts to change our approach to networked and virtual worlds through head-mounted displays, protection suits that look incredibly futuristic, and next-generation drones capable of carrying rescue equipment.

There are also several booths about artificial bodies, which are an important element of Ghost in the Shell. I get chills just looking at an artificial hand moving gracefully with its motors.

It’s not just hands, but there are also booths about remodelling research for internal organs.
They’re not showy like the other booths, but in Ghost in the Shell, internal organs are also part of the artificial bodies. It really shows you how the distance between the world of manga animation, which is a fantasy, and the real world is slowly becoming smaller.

There is another main symposium. (Look at the program). One symposium lasts more than 1 hour. The speakers are mainly university professors, and each talk tries to anticipate the world of the future, and to show a road to it.

Alright, we should try to go to this. But it’s really too bad that this event only lasts one day.
